Wallingford Cemetery is located in South East Corner of Section 24, Harrisburg Township, about 1/2
mile East of York Avenue and 200th Street and at a point approximately 500 ft North of the gravel
road. Perimeter is surrounded with Black Iron Pipe Fence.
The following narrative is found in the 1964 inscription readings by Mrs. Lula Bennett Pheifer and
Marian Flake.
"This Cemetery is on the former Miller farm, now the Swift farm. It is listed in DAR records of 1930 as Wallingford Cemetery. It is near the west side of the farm, and about 100 feet north of the gravel road. It's in a field, but has an iron fence, about 8 x 6 feet. At one time the stones were standing upright, but some years ago the owner covered the whole fenced area with a cement slab, and set the stones in the cement face up. There are only two headstones and 2 footstones, fenced. The space is hardly enough for more than 2 stones. At the time this was used as a burial ground, a group of negroes were camped near. There were many runaway slaves who came through the area. An epidemic of cholera swept their camp, and a number of them died, and were buried around the outside of the fenced area. There were no stones erected, and the present owner farms over these graves." prior to removing of growth and debris from around the small enclosure.
