Des Moines Township, Van Buren County, Iowa
Southwest Corner of Section 4
Mantonye Cemetery is one of the smaller cemeteries not among
those indexed by the Van Buren County Genealogical Society.
You will find a listing of their available cemetery books on their
web site.
This cemetery was probably near the present Harley
Poling farm. Mr. Poling said that when he moved there thirty years ago,
these tombstones formed the sidewalk from the back door. Not wishing to
use them for that purpose, he piled them behind a shed in the yard. Mr.
Poling has no idea where the stone originally stood. The farm is just north of the RR track and the Valley Branch of the Fox river. It is less than 1/2 mile from the now extinct town of Niles, and the Niles Schoolhouse. Burials 1839 to 1848. Copied October 1964 by Marian Flake Typed by Edit Ellen Williams Burials 1845 to 1871 |
